Understanding Throw Blankets

Throw blankets are more than just a stylish accessory for your home. They are versatile pieces that can add warmth and comfort to your lounging experience. Understanding the different aspects of a throw blanket, including its size and dimensions, can help you make a properly informed decision when choosing the right one for your needs.

In this section, we will delve deeper into the world of throw blankets, exploring their unique characteristics and how they differ from other types of blankets. We'll also discuss how to measure a throw blanket to ensure you select the perfect size for your comfort and style needs.

What is a Throw Blanket?

  • A throw blanket is a small, decorative textile designed for draping over furniture or adding warmth. Unlike bed blankets, throws are lightweight and not meant for tucking in”

But don't let its decorative nature fool you. Besides adding a touch of sophistication, a throw blanket can play an essential role in keeping you warm during chilly nights. Its size and dimension are perfect for comfortably wrapping around your body or draping over your legs or feet after kicking off your shoes.  Turning down the heating a notch is great for the environment and you can remain cosy and comfortable under a wool or cashmere throw with a whistle-clean conscience!

What is the Difference between a Blanket and a Throw?

There is much confusion around the terminology and different people have different understandings. Some name a ‘blanket’ what we at The Wool Company would call a ‘throw’. Here we differentiate that generally, a blanket is larger than a throw, and more likely to be used – or able to be used – as bedding. A bed blanket is large enough to be used on, draped all the way across and probably tucked into the sides of the bed it is adorning. It will be wide enough, as well as long enough, to tuck in at the end. A Throw won’t achieve this. A blanket is more than a throw, which is more of an occasional piece and more likely to be only decorative. However, there are many people out there who call a small throw a blanket.

As we’ve previously stated a throw is thrown over a piece of furniture whereas a blanket perhaps more properly called ‘a bed blanket’ is intrinsic to the purpose of the bed. However, there are many exceptions to the rule. A “sofa throw” is bigger than your average throw, but there are “large throws” that are not called sofa throws”. Some will call a blanket a throw just because it has tassled ends rather than bound hems. The best way to address the issue is not to get too exercised about the name and to simply look at the dimensions instead!

Throw Blanket Size Chart

Whether you're looking for a throw to snuggle up with on your sofa or to add a decorative touch to your bed, or for a proper bed blanket that won’t slide off you in the night, the throw blanket size chart is your go-to guide. It provides a clear breakdown of the various blanket sizes, measured inch by inch, ensuring you make the right choice.

Sizes of Throw Blankets

Throw blankets or simply throws will vary in size and are generally limited by the width of the loom upon whic h they are woven. This is especially the case for throws made with natural fibres. You will see that a common width for throws is usually around 140 x 185 cm (55” x 72”).

Bedding Size Guide

When selecting the correct bedding for your bed, knowing the standard mattress sizes across different regions is essential. Below is a helpful guide to typical bed sizes in the UK, Europe, North America, Australia,, and Latin America.

You can see the information below in our Bedding Size Guide here. It is also worth noting that even in the UK Ikea follows European bed sizes rather than UK bed sizes. More details on Ikea bed sizes are below.

Twin or Single:

  • In North America, the standard Twin size is 39 inches wide by 75 inches long (99 cm × 191 cm), providing ample space for one person.

  • In Australia, the equivalent size is slightly narrower at 35 inches by 79 inches (91 cm × 191 cm).

  • The UK and Europe both have similar dimensions for a Single bed, measuring around 35 inches wide and 79 inches long (90 cm × 200 cm).

Double (UK) or Full (US):

  • A “Fullize” bed in North America is typically 54 inches wide by 75 inches long (137 cm × 191 cm), offering more space for individuals or couples.

  • In Australia, the same dimensions apply as in North America.

  • In the UK, the Double size is slightly larger at 55 inches wide by 79 inches long (140 cm × 200 cm), providing extra room for comfort, and these measurements are mirrored in Europe and Latin America.

Queen Size (US/Australia) or King Size (UK/Eire):

  • In North America, a Queen-sized bed is 60 inches wide by 80 inches long (152 cm × 203 cm), which accommodates two people comfortably.

  • In Australia, the dimensions are almost identical at 60 inches by 78 inches (152 cm × 198 cm).

  • The UK’s King Size is much the same at 60 inches wide by 78 inches long (150 cm × 200 cm), offering a bit more space for couples.

  • European and Latin American Queen or King equivalents follow the UK dimensions, also measuring 150 cm × 200 cm 60 inches by 78 inches.

King Size (US/Australia) or Super King (UK/Eire):

  • For those needing maximum space, the US King size is 76 inches wide by 80 inches long (193 cm × 203 cm).

  • In Australia, King-sized beds are slightly narrower, measuring 72 inches by 80 inches (183 cm × 203 cm).

  • In the UK, the Super King size is slightly smaller, at 6’ x 6’6” / 71” x 78” /. 180 cm x 200 cm.

  • In Europe, the dimensions of a King size are 5’3" x 6’6” / 63” x 78” / 160 cm x 200 cm. They don’t define a Super King-size bed in Europe.

Suggested Blanket Sizes

Choosing the right size blanket is just as important as getting the correct mattress size. A good rule of thumb is to calculate the width of your mattress and add twice the mattress depth plus an additional 5 inches each side and the end (10 inches / 25 cm additional width) for tucking in or draping below the mattress.

For example, if your mattress is 54 inches wide and 8 inches deep, the blanket size should be:

54 inches (width) + 8 inches (depth) + 8 inches (depth) + 10 inches (extra for tuck) = 80 inches wide.

This formula helps ensure your blanket fits neatly over your bed, allowing for comfortable draping or tucking around the edges. Remember that blanket sizes are approximate, so it’s always a good idea to measure your bed before purchasing to ensure a perfect fit.

For optimal care and longevity of your blankets, always follow manufacturer instructions, including appropriate washing and drying methods.
