Wrap your baby in a touch of luxury with our finest, softest wool baby shawls that can be handed down through the family for many years to come. Whether you decide to pass the baby shawl on to future generations or keep it as a memento, our white baby shawls will become a cherished family heirloom. Most are traditionally made in Nottingham, England, 'the City of Lace', using traditional methods and are hand-finished, ensuring only the best quality.
Baby shawl blankets are often a baby's most trusted companion, so we have made sure ours is made from the softest, highest-grade yarns, from pure 100% cashmere, cotton, wool, or wool-cotton blend. Our traditional baby shawl collection is suitable for both girls and boys and will provide the cuddliest and softest experience for your baby, whether in the cot or cradled in your arms.
White baby shawls became popular in the 1700s due to the tradition of immersing babies in the water during the christening. They remain in use today and have grown more popular recently because of the British Royal family.
A traditional royal baby shawl was used by Queen Elizabeth II following Prince Charles's birth, and years later, when Princess Diana went on to have Prince William and Prince Harry, she followed in the footsteps of her mother-in-law. Her sons both decided to follow the tradition and wrapped their children in a white baby shawl blanket or 'receiving blanket' too.
While there is a vast quantity of knitted baby shawls out there, we have ensured that our select collection of luxury shawl blankets will stand up to the rigours of day-to-day baby life and are easily cared for, so the newborn baby shawl can be passed down to future generations.
Many of our wool baby shawls are traditionally knitted in England, some are knitted in Nottingham, the "City of Lace" in the most traditional manner. They are elegantly aesthetic and surprisingly practical for daily use. Most of our wool baby blankets require minimal care, so if there are any spills it is easy to return your shawl for a baby to its pristine condition. Just hand-wash your cashmere, wool or cotton baby shawl with an approved detergent such as Woolskin Premium Woolwash which is a natural detergent and is completely safe for your baby.
Please be aware that although our traditional lace-knit receiving blankets may appear to be Hurt's brand shawls (there has been some confusion), this is inaccurate as our traditional baby shawls are authentically The Wool Company brand shawls. The quality and the provenance are that of traditional Nottingham wool lace knitting, but the brand name, packaging and service are that of The Wool Company.
Note that these baby shawls are of the highest quality and are made of natural wool, but they are not meant to be used as warm blankets (although we have blankets for babies too)
Keep the baby shawl tradition alive and consider buying a wool baby shawl over a blanket next time you are looking for a unique baby shower gift, newborn gift, or one-of-a-kind luxury christening gift.
