Tuck-in or Drape?

To tuck or to drape? The tyranny of choice! Whichever you choose it is still worth measuring. It is a bit subjective but we suggest the following...

Tuck-in

To tuck in your blanket allow at least 13 cm / 5 inches on each side and at the bottom - in addition to the mattress depth of course. Allow more if you want the blankets to be loose tucked so they don't get pulled out the moment somebody gets under them. Too much tuck-in becomes hard work as you have to lift the mattress further.

Drape

More subjective again. Our rule is always to have at least enough drape to cover the depth of the mattress on each side. More is better. We prefer a minimum to at least reach the bottom of the frame or divan. How low you should go is up to you. Try out some options before you buy so you end up with the look that you want.

Suggested Blanket Sizes

We suggest blanket width should be calculated as follows: -
Mattress Width plus 2 x Mattress Depth plus 10-12 inches / 25-30 cm for tucking in or draping below the mattress.
Please note that the sizes are approximate and we strongly recommend that you measure your mattress / bed before making a purchase. Mattress depths vary hugely and can make all the difference to a good fit.
Example
  • Bed Width:           54 inches
  • Mattress Depth:   8 inches   x 2 sides = 16
  • Tuck-in or Drape: 5 inches   x 2 sides = 10

Required blanket width = 54 + 16 + 10 = 80 inches.

Non-standard Bed Sizes

Not all beds are standard sizes. Most UK retailers follow the UK standard for bed  sizes. Ikea is one that doesn't.

Ikea Bed Sizes Compared To UK Bed Sizes

Ikea beds are not UK-standard sizes. Whereas UK bed lengths vary according to their width as shown above, Ikea bed lengths are all 200cm / 6’6” long.

Ikea Bed Sizes                              Standard UK Bed Sizes

Single: 200cm/6’6” x 90cm/3’                Single: 190cm/6’3” x 90cm/3’

Double: 200cm/6’6” x 140cm/4’7”         Double: 190cm/6’3” x 135cm/4’6”

King Size: 200cm/6’6” x 160cm/5’3”     King Size: 200cm/6’6 x 150cm/5’

Super King: unavailable                         Super King: 200cm/6’6” x 180cm/6'

Other anomalous bed sizes

Antique and vintage beds, custom-built and privately imported beds are usually not UK standard sizes. Some people have a 4' wide or a  5'6" wide bed which are non-standard sizes in the UK. It's generally better to size up with blankets in these cases but too much blanket can be almost as irritating as not enough and they're more expensive too!

Conclusion

For a great result it's always worth measuring your bed width, length and depth. It's easier to measure first and get the right size first time!
